Research Interests:

I am interest to use fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as model where it has been already used for studying human diseases including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's  and other human pathologies including cancer. My interest concerning the ability of this small insect to give a wide image reflecting the complex and systematics effects happened at a whole organism. D. melanogaster has a completely sequenced genome, showed genetic similarity to humans, considering that approximately 75% of the genes involved in human diseases have related or similar sequences to this fly. Moreover, the use of D. melanogaster is ethically less controversial than using other higher in vivo model organisms.

I have a good experimental genetics experience in mutation research and genetic toxicology using D. melanogaster. Where I have been checked the ability of nanomaterials to induce mutagenic effect by increasing mutant wing spot via the somatic mutation and recombination assay. Also, i have a good experimental experience with molecular events that pave the way to mutagenesis and carcinogenesis end points scenario as oxidative stress, gene expression and DNA damage.

I have eight international scientific articles in addition to one review and book chapter that has been published in a highl quality journal.

Systematic in vivo study of NiO nanowires and nanospheres: biodegradation, uptake and biological impacts.
High aspect ratio nanomaterials (NM) have a promising future in medicine and industry as a unique category of NM. Consequently, it is important to evaluate their potential biological side-effects before crediting their use. To understand the mechanisms of degradation, internalisation, and interaction with different biological targets, we used the in vivo model Drosophila melanogaster to obtain a systematic and complete ... Copper oxide nanoparticles and copper sulphate act as antigenotoxic agents in drosophila melanogaster.
The biological reactivity of metal and metal oxide nanomaterials is attributed to their redox properties, which would explain their pro- or anti-cancer properties depending on exposure circumstances. In this sense, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONP) have been proposed as a potential anti-tumoral agent. The aim of this study was to assess if CuONP can exert antigenotoxic effects using Drosophila melanogaster as ... Read more

Drosophila melanogaster as a suitable in vivo model to determine potential side effects of nanomaterials: A review.
Despite being a relatively new field, nanoscience has been in the forefront among many scientific areas. Nanoparticle materials (NM) present interesting physicochemical characteristics not necessarily found in their bulky forms, and alterations in their size or coating markedly modify their physical, chemical, and biological properties. Due to these novel properties there is a general trend to exploit these NM in ... Read more

New insights in the acute toxic/genotoxic effects of CuO nanoparticles in the in vivo Drosophila model.
Metal oxide nanoparticles are highly reactive from the biological point of view and, for this reason, it exists important reservations in regard human health impact. We used Drosophila as a promising in vivo model to diagnose the biological effects of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs). Due to the potential role of ions release the effects of CuO-NPs were compared with those ... Read more

Embryology
