The aim of the work:

to study the effect of honey as topical agent for the local treatment of burn wound in a prospective controlled clinical trial in comparison with the conventional topical agents as regards controlling wound infection, effect on wound organisms, preparing the wound for skin grafting and healing effects.

Patients and methods:

Twenty eight (28) adult patients with burns between 10-45% TBsA were included. 14 patients were treated with topical honey and 14 with topical povidone iodine cream. 

Results: Honey induced Faster healing of partial thickness burns comparing with povidone iodine. Full-thickness burns treated with honey were prepared for skin grafting in a shorter time and with better take of the graft than those of the conventional group.

Conclusions:

Honey was effective as a topical agent for treatment of burns with better control of burn wound infection and early preparation of these wounds for skin grafting with a better take of the graft,.
