Hundred patients with tinea capitis attending the Dermatology out-patient clinic of Sohag University Hospital were examined clinically and mycologically. The ages of patients ranged from 2 months to 22 years with a mean (6.39 ± 3.75 years). 54% of cases were between 5 and JO years of age. Males were af fected more than females in a ratio of 2 of cases were from rural areas. Positive history of contact with animals was 36%. The most co111111on clinical variety was scaly type (55%) followed by kerion (25%), black dot (19%) and lastly favus (1 %). Direct micro- scopic examination was positive in 83% of cases. The cultural examination revealed pos• itive results in 91 % of cases. Six dermatophv• res were identified namely: M. canis (56%) followed by T. violaceum ( 19.8%), M. gyp• sewn (8.8%), T. rubrum (8.8%), T. simii (3.3%) and lastly T. soudanense (3.3%)
