Epidemiology

Although reported in all age groups, CADs are most common between the ages of 35 and 50 years, with a peak incidence in the fifth decade.

They account for up to 20% of strokes in patients under the age of 45 years.

A community based study showed an incidence of cervicocerebral dissections of 2.6 per 100 000 per year.

However, cervicocerebral dissections may be asymptomatic or may cause only minor symptoms and therefore, their true incidence is difficult to ascertain.

The incidence of CADs is non-significantly higher in women.
