I have been working on ecology and taxonomy of marine fungi for 25 years and these results in two book chapters, 57 publications in top journals in the field, 25  presentations at international conferences and the description ot three new orders (Jahnulales, Tirisporellales and Torpedosporales), six new families, 19 new genera, 47 new species and 16 combinations.

I obtained my B.Sc. in Botany (Excellent with honour), M.Sc. in Marine Mycology from Sohag University, Egypt. I joined City University of Hong Kong in 1997–2001 and obtained my PhD degree in Marine Mycology in 2001. During 2004–2008, I worked as a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Biotechnology and Drug-Research, University of Kaiserslautern, Germany (IBWF), Center of Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine – as fullbright visiting scholar at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California-San Diego, USA and JSPS visiting scholar at XBR, Japan Agency for Marine- Earth Science and Technology, Japan where I worked on ecology, molecular phylogeny and natural products of marine fungi. During 2011–2013, I joined the Department of Botany and Microbiology, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia. 

I was awarded the best researcher in the field of Plant and Animal Science in 2018 by Clarivate Analytics (Web of Science) in collaboration with the Egyptian Knowledge Bank.

My current research interest include:

§  Ecology and taxonomy of marine fungi.

§  Endophytic fungi from aquatic and medicinal plants.

§  Natural products from aquatic and endophytic fungi.

§  Molecular phylogeny of fungi.

§  Molecular ecology (Pyrosequencing).

§  Deep sea fungi.

§  Ultrastructure of fungi.

Lolia aquatica gen. et sp. nov. (Lindgomycetaceae, Pleosporales), a new coelomycete from freshwater habitats in Egypt.
An unknown coelomycete that was collected from the River Nile and associated irrigation canals in Egypt is described. Marine fungi from Sarushima Island, Japan and phylogenetic evaluation of the genus Naufragella.
Twenty-seven fungi (18 ascomycetes, 9 anamorphic fungi) were recorded from 91 driftwood samples collected from Sarushima Island, Japan. Ceriosporopsis halima, Corollospora maritima, and Halosphaeria appendiculata occurred most frequently in the fungal community.
