Abstract

Objective : to investigate the association between serum albumin and albumin/globulin ratio measured within 24 hours after stroke onset and short- term outcome 3 months following acute ischemic stroke Background:Age,gender, impaired consciousness, diabetes, hypertension, and low albumin level at admission are linked to poor outcome including mortality or stroke recurrence Methods : 125 patients with acute ischemic stroke were enrolled, serum albumin and albumin/globulin ratio (A-G ratio )were measured at admission, patients were then followed up to 3 months later and functional outcome was evaluated using the modified Rankin Scale (MRS)and graded as favorable outcome MRS0-2 or unfavorable MRS 3-6 ,and the relationship between serum albumin and A-G ratio with stroke outcome was assessed Results :of 125 patients of the study 75were females versus 50 males,60 patients with low serum albumin, and 114with low A/G ratio ,patients with favorable outcome were 68 versus 57 with unfavorable outcome with significant lower serum albumin and lower A/G ratio in the unfavorable patients, also with significant lower serum albumin in died than survivors Conclusion:Low admission serum albumin and A/G ratio were associated with poor functional outcome,in addition low serum albumin was a predictor of 3 months mortality, trials for correcting this Hypoalbuminemia may play a role to lessen the danger of poor outcome of ischemic stroke
