- Research areas:
- Epidemiological studies and Molecular diagnosis of parasites and protozoa
- Studies on Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum as diseases encountering surrounding environment through contamination by their oocysts. Estimation of seroprevalences of gondii and N. caninum in different animals especially farm ones. In addition studying the factors that may contribute to such prevalence and trying to find ways to control the risk factors.
- My studies were directed also toward studying the status of toxoplasmosis in its final host (cats) that is known to initiate the gondii life cycle. Analysis of cat samples (serum/plasma and faeces). DNA extraction from cat feces to investigate the presence of protozoa (T. gondii, crypotosporidium, Giardia, etc) and parasites (Toxocara cati, hook worm, Taenia, etc).
- Investigate the endemic parasitic disease in other countries through specialized projects, for example, In Thailand a special focus on the liver fluke (Opisthorchis viverrini) infestation in human. Examining animals samples that may share human in such parasites as, dogs, cats. For example DNA extracted from fecal samples that subject to PCR and sequencing to identify the prevalent parasitic species.
- Molecular and Genetic studies
- Isolation of gondii: from naturally infected cat. Genotypic and phenotypic analyses and further comparison to other T. gondii strains that already identified worldwide.
- Identification and characterization of gondii bradyzoite specific genes that may play an important role in the mechanism of action of the bradyzoite. In trial to explore the function of targeted genes during the parasite transitional phase and their involvement in the latent toxoplasmosis.
- Generation of knock out parasites where some genes were disrupted. As this mechanism facilitates the functional analysis of the targeted genes.
- Infection studies to the laboratory animals (mice) by the protozoa ( gondii and N. caninum). In order to explore the pathogenicity of these parasites and its effect on the clinical status of the host.
