Memorandum of Understanding

 

 

of scientific co-operation between

 

the Department of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, University of Sohag / Egypt

 

and

 

the Department of Egyptology, Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, Johannes Gutenberg-University

Mainz / Germany

 

The University of Sohag and the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, hereinafter referred to as the “parties”:

 

In order to promote scholarly and cultural co-operation, the Department of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, University of Sohag, and the Department of Egyptology, Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, Johannes Gutenberg-University, hereby agree upon co-operating in the field of Egyptology according to the following Memorandum. The provisions of this Memorandum are as follows:

 

Article 1

 

Both institutions consider a partnership and co-operation in Egyptological research to be of mutual benefit. Based on existing relationships they agree upon cooperative projects in research.

 

Article 2

 

Joint projects, which will be carried out by the Department of Egyptology of Mainz University and the Department of Egyptology of Sohag University, will focus on fieldwork in Egyptian archaeology.

 

Article 3

 

Both institutes nominate a representative who will co-ordinate and supervise all aspects of co-operation.

 

Article 4

 

Both parties shall endeavour to promote the following aspects of scholarly and cultural co-operation:

 

  • Mutual support in organisation and carrying out of archaeological fieldwork in Egypt
  • Exchange of postgraduate students and postdoctoral scholars with the emphasis on short-term stays (3 to 6 months; possibly to be financed by scholarships from sponsoring organisations)
  • Co-operation in scholarly research and exchange of research findings
  • Making arrangements for guest professors on short or long term teaching appointments
  • Guests at the respective host institutions will be granted access to research facilities such as libraries, archives, etc.

Future projects will be negotiated and decided depending upon the availability of equipment and finances. The execution of these projects will not cause any financial obligations for either side.

 

Article 5

 

Both sides agree on conducting an initial joint research project with the following objective(s):

 

The Asyut Project: documentation and interpretation of the ancient necropolis in Gebel Asyut al-gharbi

 

Detailed research proposals will be prepared in close co-operation between both sides.

 

Article 6

 

Results of joint research projects are to be published in Germany in a series (edited by a German-Egyptian committee) as well as in international journals.

 

Article 7

 

The parties understand that all of the financial arrangements should be negotiated and shall depend on the availability of funds.

 

Article 8

 

This Memorandum shall enter into force on the date of its signature and shall remain in force unless either parties notifies the other – in writing – of its desire to terminate it at least ninety days before its termination.

 

Done at Sohag and Mainz on 29 April 2008 in two originals in the Arabic and English languages, both texts being equally authentic. In case of misinterpretation the English text shall prevail.
