Aim: to assess the results of use of acrylic implant for artificial eyes and the patient satisfaction about these results.

Patients and methods

29 eyes of 29 patients under went evisceration and acrylic implant for artificial eye. 18 females and 11 male with mean age 25±7.9 years (range 14-50 years). Follow up period was at least 6 months. The main outcome measures were the cosmetic appearance of the implanted eye in comparison with the sound eye and its movements. Also the patient satisfaction about this cosmetic appearance was also followed up.

Results:-

During the follow up period 2 artificial eyes were explanted. Five cases developed lid edema and ecchymosis. 21 of 29 (72.4%) patients had very good cosmetic appearance of the implanted eye and ocular motility present and the patients were completely satisfied.  6 patients of 29 (20.7%) patients were partially satisfied as the ocular motility was in complete. 2 patients (6.9%) were not satisfied.

Conclusion:

 This study proved that the use of acrylic implants for artificial eyes is nearly the same universal results regarding cosmesis, eye movements and patient satisfaction yet this provide the cheapest alternative for the patients who cannot afford the cost of expensive implants as this is suitable for our locality in Sohag governorate Egypt.
