Abstract
Background: Cerebral Palsy (CP) registers appear to be appropriate tools for answering quastions regarding the prev-alence and characteristics of this common childhood disability.
Aim: This study was conducted to establish database about CP in Sohag City in Sohag Governorate.
Subjects and Methods: CP childern in general, health insurance and University Hospital, Physical Therapy Private Centers, Neuro Pediatric Clinics and Public Health Centers which provide physical therapy and Neuro Pediatric Services in Sohage City were involved in this study CP childern of both gender ranged in age from 3 month to 17 years. The outcome measures were Gross Motor Functional Classification System (GMFCS), Gross Motor Functional Measure (GMFM), Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) and Viking Speech Scale.
Results: Within the study population, 55.9% are spastic type, 19% non spastic type distributed as 10.5% dyskinetic and 8.5% ataxic and 22.9% transient and perminanthypotonia. Outcome based on GMFCS were 7.8% for level I, 14.7% level II, 36% level III, 24.8% level IV and 16.7% level V. Percentage according to GMFM, MACS and Viking Speech Scales and its relations also recorded.
Discussion and Conclusion: The current study revealed that CP children of both gender incidence of spastic type is the major, while the least prevalence is ataxic type. High incidences of children with CP were level III in GMFCS. The results revealed that CP children with level III, IV and Von GMFCS about 77.5% from CP study sample are not actively ambulant, functional and able to communicate.
