PHYSICAL OPTICS (203 pyhs)
This course is taught for the second year students in the Faculty of Science, specializing in physics and chemistry, as well as specialization in physics and mathematics.
Objectives:
In geometrical optics course, we made use of light rays to demonstrate reflection and refraction of light and the imaging of light with mirrors and lenses.
In the current course, we shift the emphases from light rays to light waves – from geometrical optics to physical optics.
With physical optics, we are able to account for important phenomena such as interference, diffraction and polarization. The study of these phenomena lays the foundation for understanding of some concepts and devices such as holograms, interferometer, thin-film interference, gratings, polarizers and so on.
