Teaching is considered both as an art and as science. It is an art in the sense of being an activity, which is practiced with skill and it is a science in the same sense that the activity can be based on a body of systematically derived knowledge, converted to principles with which to Guide its practices.
Teaching methods which place the student in an active situation in an active situation for learning are more likely to be effective than those which do not.
