POSTGRADUATE CAREER:

GENERAL TRAINING:

During the year in which I worked as a house officer, I spent two months in each of the departments of General Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and one month in each of Accident and Emergencies and Anesthesia. As a house officer, my duties and responsibilities included general patient care and management in the Hospital wards, assisting in Outpatients clinics, assisting in various surgeries and performing minor surgical procedures.

Pulmonological TRAINING:

Following my general training, I spent more than three years as a resident in the department of Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis, Assiut University Hospital. This is the largest hospital in the South of Egypt and one of the largest in the country with a total number of beds amounting to 1270. It is considered as a tertiary referral center for difficult cases throughout the Southern of Egypt. The Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis department is the largest and most up-dated in the South of Egypt.

My work as a resident has entailed a broad based training in Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis. These included duties such definitive management of cases of Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis. It also included doing 1-in 2 Rota, taking part in two lists of Fibrooptic bronchoscopy a week and attending a busy Out Patient Clinics twice a week and attending special Out Patient Clinics for tuberculosis twice a week . By the end of my residency, I was able to do such skills as performing & interpreting pulmonary function, preparation for Fibrooptic bronchoscopy & how to introduced FOB. and minor surgical procedures as insertion of intercostal tubes, aspiration of pleural space (fluid or pus), performing closed pleural biopsy by abram needle, Interpretation of chest radiographs, performing & interpreting arterial blood gases.

During that time I started to prepare for my Master degree. This included a First Part Exam in medical subjects related to Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis such as Anatomy, Physiology, Histology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Bacteriology, Community Medicine and Internal Medicine. Then I went through preparing my thesis, which was then submitted to a board of examiners. After this I was eligible to set for the second part of the master degree, which included written, clinical and oral exam. I passed this exam successfully in Mayo 1994.

After the residency period I was appointed as Assistant lecturer in the Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis Department, Sohag University Hospital, Sohag Faculty of Medicine, South Valley University. During the period of my Assistant lecturer I took a share in the establishment and organization of the first Fibrooptic bronchoscopy Unit in the South of Egypt, which was established, in Sohag University Hospital.

My job as Assistant lecturer included Teaching of final years medical student, doing 2 lists of diagnostic FOB weekly, as well as supervision of Out Patient Clinics and learning new residence how to deal with different problems in Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis.

In 1995 I have registered for M.D. degree in the department of Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis, at Sohag Faculty of Medicine, South Valley University. The Subject of the Thesis was “Comparative study between fiberoptic bronchoscopy and CT-guided percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy in the diagnosis of mediastinal and pleuropulmonary lesions ”. After completion of my thesis and this was submitted to a board of examiners. After being accepted I applied for the M.D. in Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis exam, which entailed two written paper in Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis, one paper in Pathology & physiology, and a paper of case commentary. It also included a clinical, and oral exam. I have passed this exam by the mid of 2002 and was then appointed as a Lecturer and Consultant in Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis in Sohag Faculty of Medicine.

By that time, I have established the Department of Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis and the Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy unit at the newly established Sohag Faculty of Medicine. An Fiberoptic

Bronchoscopy lists are run weekly.

In September 2007 I have applied for the job of Assistant Professor in Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis and was appointed in this job since then.

In December 2012 I have applied for the job of Professor in Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis and was appointed in this job since then.

At October 2009, I was became the Head of the Department of Chest Diseases & Tuberculosis until February 2015.

Areas oF Clinical Interest

The management of Chest problems using fibreoptic Bronchoscopy & Medical Thoracoscopy is my main interest and I took, and still do, every opportunity to develop and update my clinical and practical skills through attending courses, visiting other centers at home and abroad, reading the literature, getting involved in the management of such cases and in the same time being critical of my own results.

My work in our department in Assiut and Sohag has allowed me to develop my clinical interest in the following fields:

◙-Diagnostic and Intervention Bronchoscopy:

I do various diagnostic fiberoptic Bronchoscopic procedures. The development of this interest has been greatly facilitated by cases admitted to my department from outpatients clinic, referrals from colleagues in my own department, other units within the governorate, and from areas further field. During my career, I have performed more than three thousand cases. In the field of Intervention Bronchoscopy I have attended several workshops entails Cryotherapy, Electrocoutary, Argon plasma therapy, Insertion of Diamond stent in cases of tracheal stenosis.

◙-Pulmonary Function Tests:

During my career I have performed all the varieties of Pulmonary Functions including Arterial Blood Gases.

◙-Intercostal tube Drainage:

I have performed Closed tube thoracostomy for all cases of spontaneous pneumothorax, Pleural effusion especially malignant type and empyema thoracis.
