An efficient one-pot synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones or thiones is described using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as a catalyst in the reaction of an aromatic aldehyde, β-ketoester and urea or thiourea under solvent free conditions in terms of excellent yields and very short reaction time.
