Titanium dioxide (TiO2), a naturally occurring oxide of titanium, is commonly used as a food additive pigment in confectionery products such as chocolates, candies, bakeries, snacks, and chewing gums due to its brightening and whitening qualities. In the European Union (EU), it is known as E171, and no maximum limit is defined. It is a fine, white, crystalline, odorless powder with little toxicity. Many studies have demonstrated that TiO2NPs delivered in various methods move through the systemic circulation to many organs, aggregate, and cause significant harm. Recent research found that Tio2 NP nanoparticles could pass several blood-essential organ barriers and cell membranes, generating free radicals and causing oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity. Therefore, much care must be paid to them.
