Introduction  & Objectives

Alopecia Areata is a common cause of non scarring alopecia that occurs in a patchy, confluent or diffuse pattern. Dermoscopy is a non-invasive useful technique for the clinical diagnosis of Alopecia Areata and other diseases.Topical minoxidil solution 5% and Platelet Rich Plasmaare important modalities used in treatment of Alopecia Areata. Our objectives were to evaluate the dermoscopic findings in diagnosisand prognosis of Alopecia Areata treated with topical Minoxidil   5% solution Versus Platelet rich plasma injections.

Material &Methods

90 patients were allocated  into 3 groups, the 1st treated with topical minoxidil 5 % solution, the 2nd with Platelets Rich Plasma injections and the 3rd with placebo.Diagnosis and follow up were done by serial digital camera photograph of the lesions and dermoscopic scan before & every 1 month after treatment for three months.

Results

Patients treated with PRPand minoxidil 5% both have significant hair growth than placebo (p<0.05). Patients treated with PRP had an earlier response in the form of hair regrowth, reduction  in short  vellus  hair and dystrophic hair  unlike patients treated with Minoxidil and control (P<0.05).

Conclusions

Dermoscopy is useful in diagnosing Alopecia Areata. It  is able to evaluate AA severity and prediction of its prognosis with treatment. PRP is effective procedure in the treatment of alopecia areata with no danger of side effects especially hypertrichosis or allergic reactions which seen commonly with Minoxidil therapy.
