Torpedospora and Swampomyces have not been classified into any family or order with certainty. Results, based on individual and combined analyses of the partial small and large subunit rRNA gene sequences, indicate that Torpedospora and Swampomyces form a monophyletic clade and group within the subclass Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes. During a study of the intertidal mangrove fungi of Egypt, two new species of Swampomyces were found and are described here. The new species Swampomyces clavatispora differs from the other species in having clavate ascospores, while S. aegyptiacus differs from S. armeniacus and S. triseptatus in having longer and narrower ascospores.
